Trinidad was founded by the Spanish conqueror Diego Velázquez in 1514 and became a Cuban trading center by the end of the 17th century. The wealth attracted numerous pirates. During the eighteenth century the sugar trade boom made Trinidad a wealthy town and attracted many immigrants. Thousands of African slaves were imported to work in the sugar industry.
Trinidad is considered the Museum city of Cuba and for this reason, in 1988, Unesco declared Trinidad and the Valle de Los Ingenios "World Heritage". The Plaza Mayor is the central axis of the old city and historic center of Trinidad. It holds peculiar construction in which the unevenness of the land is corrected.
In addition to its beautiful natural surroundings and colonial appearance, Trinidad is located by the sea, which has two excellent beaches: Ancon and Maria Aguilar, Ancon Beach is just a little over 7 miles (12 km) from the city. It is two and a half miles (4 km) long, with white sand and green-blue water. Its seabed is ideal for scuba diving.
